Remedials on your Electrical Installation Condition Report: What does this mean?

You’ve got your EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) and remedials are urgently needed – but what does this mean? Remedial repairs on your building are more important than the initial testing.

The EICR outlines the distribution boards tested and any problems or dangers present will be classified by a coding system – C1, C2, C3 or FI. For instance C1 means danger present, risk of injury and immediate remedial action required.

You may have heard the term ‘remedial’ being thrown around. This part is more important than the testing itself as it ensures that the building is safe and can be used by your employees and visitors. If remedials aren’t actioned then the workplace is potentially a hazardous environment and most likely invalidates your insurance policy. A lot of insurers will insist on immediate remedials being completed once you have your testing report, it is important to read your insurance policy for reference.

The appliances that are in use the most or distribution boards with high usage circuits are likely going to need the most attention. If observation codes C1, C2, C3 or FI have shown up on your report then remedials are required as a matter of urgency to keep your staff and work premises safe.

Remedials should be carried out by a NICEIC certified electrician. Ideally they should have experience in inspection and testing. To ensure remedials are carried out correctly and compliance is achieved, you should ask the following questions:

  • Are they an approved member of the NICEIC?
  • Do they have the relevant qualifications and experience?
  • Do they have regular and sufficient experience of inspection and testing?
