What qualifications does a PAT tester need?

Wondering what qualifications a PAT tester needs? We share the answer to this question along with some other useful information around PAT testing requirements.

Who can PAT test?

By law, any competent person can carry out a PAT test. In this instance, competence is defined as having knowledge about electricity and previous experience in working with electrics – including the system that they’re working on. They must also have an excellent understanding of the risks involved and be able to spot when it’s no longer safe to work.

What qualifications are needed to PAT test?

There are no specific qualifications legally required in order to PAT test. However, it’s expected that anyone carrying out this kind of testing would have completed a course provided by a qualified instructor. This training will typically take 40 hours, after which the individual will know how to safely and effectively carry out a PAT test.

Relevant qualifications received include the City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate for In-Service Inspections and Testing of Electrical Equipment (2377) – which is the minimum qualification held by the members of our team at Intersafe. During this course, individuals will be able to learn, develop, and practise the skills required to test electrical equipment.

Benefits of choosing a qualified PAT tester

There are a number of benefits associated with using a qualified PAT tester. Perhaps the most important is that they will know how to complete the tests safely and you can be confident that they’ll be able to provide the correct results. This will give you peace of mind that your electrical equipment is in good working order and won’t put you, your employees, tenants, or premises at risk.

When you choose a qualified PAT tester, you’ll be issued with a certificate following the testing. This proves that you’ve had the test carried out and are compliant with the regulations surrounding this.

As previously mentioned, each member of the Intersafe team is highly qualified for PAT testing. All of our PAT testers are highly experienced across many different sectors, making them extremely adaptable when working in different environments and requirements of projects.
