An independent report has concluded that a major restoration of the Houses of Parliament without moving MPs and peers out could cost £5.7bn and take 32 years.

The Houses of Parliament is a 150-year-old Grade I listed building, it is partly sinking, contains asbestos and has outdated cabling. An independent report has concluded that without moving MPs and peers, the cost could be £5.7bn and take 32 years. ;If MP and peers were moved out for six years, the cost would drop to £3.5bn. The Commons and Lords will have to vote in the next few years on what to do.

The report’s summary says “a full move out is described as providing the best opportunity to mitigate risks, but the report recognises this would create logistical challenges”.
Outdated cabling is a big electrical safety risk and could lead to serious consequences. Electrical appliances should be checked annually and a log of all equipment kept up-to-date.
